Thanks for checking out Chess Mates!  This file includes installation instructions, a troubleshooting section, a customer support section, and other stuff.  Please read it.  


Registering Chess Mates

After you install the Chess Mates demo, please double-click the "Register with Brainstorm" application to register with Brainstorm.  We'll notify you about any product updates or patches and new offers.  You can register via modem on our toll-free registration hotline if you prefer, or you can print out the registration form and mail or fax it to us.


Minimum System Configuration

The Chess Mates demo will run on any Macintosh with a 68040 or PowerPC microprocessor.  You'll need about 8.5MB free space on your hard disk to install the game.  You will also need a double-speed (or faster) CD-ROM drive, System 7.0 or later, and 7351k free (6953k free with Virtual Memory on).


Installing The Game

Double-click the "Install Chess Mates Demo" icon on the CD-ROM to install the game to your hard disk.  You have to do this before you can begin playing the game, and you'll need about 8.5MB free space on your hard disk before you install the game.

From the installer, choose "Install Chess Mates Demo".  After installation is complete, double-click the "Chess Mates Demo v1.0" icon to begin the game.

If you are running System 7.5.2 or earlier, you may see an error message stating that you need Sound Manager 3.1.  If so, just double-click the "Chess Mates Installer" icon on the CD-ROM and click "Custom Install".  Then choose "Install Sound Manager 3.1". 

If you have a Power Macintosh with System 7.5.1 or earlier, you may see an error message stating ÒThe application ÒChess MatesÓ can not be opened because an unexpected error occured.Ó    You may also see the application expand at launch and then immediately contract without this error message.   You may need MathLib 2.03 to solve the problem.  If so, just double-click the "Chess Mates Installer" icon on the CD-ROM and click "Custom Install".  Then choose "Install Mathlib 2.0.3". 


Jerky Animation Problems?

If the animation in the Chess Mates demo appears jerky or it skips, there are a few things you can do to improve the animation:

¥	Open the "Sharing Setup" Control Panel and make sure File Sharing is off.
¥  Open the "Memory" Control Panel, turn Virtual Memory off, and restart.
¥	If you have RAM Doubler installed, you should probably turn it off and restart.


Multiple Monitors

If you are using multiple monitors, make sure that you have them both set to 256 colors or you may experience palette problems.


Troubleshooting

If you double-click the Chess Mates demo and nothing seems to happen, and you have System 7.5.2 or earlier, you may need to install the game's required system software.  Double-click the "Chess Mates Installer" icon on the CD-ROM, click "Custom", and choose to install the "Sound Manager 3.1" and "MathLib 2.0.3" items.

Chess Mates will probably lock up if you use "Now Menus" to change your Mac's sound volume.  To change your Mac's sound volume while running Chess Mates, use the "Volume Control" item in the Edit menu.

If you own a 14 inch monitor, please do not switch resolution while the application is running.
Doing so will result in a crash.  

If you running Chess Mates on an AV system, with system 7.5.1 or earlier installed, without Quicktime, you may experience problems in launching the application.  Launching the application using this configuration may result in a dialog box that states the CD is missing from the drive.  We recommend that you install Quicktime to your system and then re-install Chess Mates.
