Many years ago as a filmmaker, I developed an interest in interactive technologies. As I began to work with them, I realized that they had great potential for opening up new kinds of learning experiences for young people. They offered an alternative to some of the traditional approaches to education that did not work for me as a youth. As a result, for over 15 years I've been committed to finding ways to capture kids' natural interest in learning and engage them more actively and productively in the learning process. Lucas Learning reflects my own passion for learning as it creates products like this one. The Gungan Frontier explores rich content in an immersive and entertaining environment as it engages the player in constructing and managing an ecosystem. I hope you enjoy the experience and that it will contribute to your own lifetime of learning. George Lucas B) Minimum System Requirements The minimum requirements for running The Gungan Frontier on your Macintosh system are as follows: COMPUTER: Apple Macintosh and 100% compatibles. OPERATING SYSTEM: Macintosh OS version 7.6 or higher required. CPU: Minimum 200 Mhz PowerPC 603e or 132 Mhz PowerPC 604 or any G3 or higher processor required. CD-ROM DRIVE: Quad-speed (4X) or higher required to run the full version of The Gungan Frontier. MEMORY: Minimum 32 MB RAM required. INPUT DEVICES: Mouse and keyboard required. DISPLAY: 640x480, thousands of colors display required. HARD DISK SPACE: Minimum 30 MB free hard disk space required to install The Gungan Frontier. QUICKTIME 3.0.2: QuickTime 3.0.2 is required to run the full version of The Gungan Frontier. C) Memory The Gungan Frontier is a memory-intensive game, and requires at least 15.5 MB free memory available to run (14.5 MB free memory when Virtual Memory is enabled.) You may need to turn off some system extensions and/or turn on Virtual Memory in order to meet this requirement. You should make every effort, however, to free up as much "real" memory as possible before turning on Virtual Memory. To find out how much memory is currently available on your system, click on the Apple menu and select ABOUT THIS COMPUTER. Look at the value next to LARGEST UNUSED BLOCK. This value indicates how much memory is available to run The Gungan Frontier. If the amount of memory available is below what is needed to run The Gungan Frontier, please try one of the following: Quit out of all other applications before running the game. Each application that is running on your computer takes up some memory that The Gungan Frontier could be using. If the available memory on your system is low, quit out of these applications then restart your computer. Disable unnecessary extensions and control panels. Turning off any extensions and control panels that are not essential to playing The Gungan Frontier may free up some of the memory you need. Before disabling any extensions or control panels, you should first save your current configuration. To do this*, click on the Apple menu, select CONTROL PANELS, then EXTENSIONS MANAGER. Next, click on the FILE menu in the Finder, and select NEW SET. A dialogue box will appear on your screen, asking you for a set name. Type Standard in this dialogue box and click OK to save the set. Next, turn off everything** in Extensions Manager except the following: your CD-ROM driver (either the Apple CD-ROM extension or your particular third-party driver), QuickTime version 3.0.2, and QuickTime Power Plug for version 3.0.2. Choose NEW SET again from the FILE menu in the Finder, and name this set The Gungan Frontier. Before running The Gungan Frontier, select The Gungan Frontier set from the SELECTED SET pop-up menu at the top of the Extensions Manager screen, then restart your computer. To restore your default extensions and control panel configuration, choose Standard from the SELECTED SET pop-up menu and restart your computer. * NOTE: The procedure for managing system extensions and control panels may vary depending on the version of Mac OS currently installed on your computer. Consult Mac OS Help for directions specific to your system software. ** NOTE: Some third-party hardware components require their own drivers to function properly. If this hardware is essential to running your computer (e.g. your monitor or hard drive), DO NOT disable the extensions and/or control panels that control this hardware. Consult the user manual for the hardware in question to find out which extensions and/or control panels are essential. Turn off any RAM disks. If you have created a RAM disk on your computer, turn it off and restart your computer before running The Gungan Frontier. To turn off a RAM disk, click on the Apple menu, select CONTROL PANELS, then MEMORY. In the RAM DISK section of the Memory control panel, click the OFF button, then restart your computer. Reduce the disk cache size. Reducing the size of the disk cache on your computer to its minimum setting may increase the amount of memory available to run The Gungan Frontier. However, this may result in slower disk access. To reduce the disk cache to its minimum setting, click on the Apple menu, select CONTROL PANELS, then MEMORY. Click the down arrow next to the Cache Size indicator in the Disk Cache section of the Memory control panel until the number displayed reaches its lowest possible setting, then restart your computer. Turn off Appletalk. Disabling your Appletalk networking software may free up some memory, depending on the network configuration currently in use. To turn off Appletalk, click on the Apple menu, select CHOOSER, change the setting for Appletalk to Inactive, then restart your computer. NOTE: Remember to turn Appletalk back on before attempting to access the networking functions of your computer. Turn on Virtual Memory. If, after attempting to free up as much memory as possible, you find that your computer still does not have the free memory required to run The Gungan Frontier, you may need to turn on Virtual Memory*. To turn on Virtual Memory, click the Apple menu, select CONTROL PANELS, then MEMORY. Click the ON button in the Virtual Memory section of the Memory control panel. Next, click the arrow keys next to the name of the selected hard drive to adjust the amount of memory you wish Virtual Memory to provide. This amount should be set high enough so that when you restart your computer, there is at least 17.5 MB available under Largest Unused Block in the About This Computer window. Once you have made the necessary adjustments to Virtual Memory, restart your computer. * NOTE: If you are running Mac OS 8.5 or higher and have only 32 MB of RAM installed on your computer, you will need to turn Virtual Memory on to run The Gungan Frontier. This system software utilizes the majority of the 32 MB of installed RAM for its own operations, leaving less memory free than is required to run The Gungan Frontier. D) Game Crash Issues If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems, you should try to properly restart your computer. This will help to prevent possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears frozen, please press ESC, SPACEBAR, or RETURN before trying anything else. If your screen remains black for an extended period of time, restart your computer. E) Improving Performance The Gungan Frontier features complex simulations of a swamp ecosystem and the creation of an underwater Gungan city. As such, it will push your computer's processor and CD-ROM drive to their limits. However, there are some things you can do to improve the game's performance: Quit out of all other applications before running the game. Running other applications in the background may cause The Gungan Frontier to pause during gameplay, due to the other applications requiring access to your computer's resources. We recommend quitting out of all other applications prior to running The Gungan Frontier. Turn off Performance Options in the Options screen. For optimal performance, turn all Performance Options off. Turning off any of the Performance Options, however, will change the way the game looks on your screen. To access The Gungan Frontier Options screen, click OPTIONS on The Gungan Frontier Main Menu screen, or select OPTIONS from the Settings menu on the in-game Menu Bar. Lower the Terrain Quality in the Options screen. For optimal performance, set the Terrain Quality to Low. Lowering the Terrain Quality setting, however, will lower the level of detail with which the ground and ground cover plants are drawn on your screen. 2) Playing Star Wars The Gungan Frontier A) Keyboard Commands KEY FUNCTION A to Z When in Index or Kresch, A-Z scroll to the first lifeform, or entry, which starts with that letter Arrow Keys Scroll surface/city view Left/Right Arrows Previous and Next in the Kresch Up/Down Arrows Previous and Next in Index Help/F1 Toggles Bubble Help on/off Command-Q Quit out of the game B) Number Pad Arrow Keys The arrow keys on the number pad will not function in the game if "Num Lock" is turned on.
