Getting Started -- Installation To run Knight's Chase demo, double-click on the Knights Chase Icon that is on your CD-ROM. Double-click the System Software Installer icon on the CD-ROM to install the necessary System Software to your hard disk. There are two install options: Install System Software - Installs QuickTime 2.5 and Sound Manager 3.2.1 to your System Folder. You should install this required system software if your Mac runs System 7.5.3 or earlier. Install Display Enabler 2.2.1 - Installs Display Enabler 2.2.1 to your Extensions folder. You should choose this option if you have System 7.5.2 or earlier. * Please Note that the CD-ROM that contains Knight's Chase Demo needs to be in the CD-ROM drive in order to run Knight's Chase Demo. Startup Settings Window When you run KnightÕs Chase Demo for the first time, the following dialog box will be displayed. If you do not want these preferences to be displayed again, click the "DonÕt ask again" box. You can always access these settings through the "Startup" option in the Preferences window, or by keeping the Option key pressed once you have launched the game. Ê Startup Settings: Turn off File Sharing - This option will turn off File Sharing every time you start the game, in the interest of speed. Disable Screen Saver - This option will stop your screen saver from interrupting KnightÕs Chase Demo. Hide Control Strip - This option will hide the Control Strip. It will automatically reappear when you leave KnightÕs Chase Demo. Auto-switch to 256 colors - This option will make KnightÕs Chase Demo switch your monitor to 256 colors when the game starts. Auto-switch to 640x480 - This option will make KnightÕs Chase Demo switch to 640x480 resolution, which will let you play in full-screen mode. This option will only be available on certain Macintoshes. Choose Monitor - If you have several monitors, you can choose which one you wish to use by clicking on this button. Preferences Window When you run the game for the first time, the "Preferences" window will be displayed. If you wish to access it again, you can do so via the Edit menu. Ê Preferences Settings: Size of game screen - Unless your Macintosh has a PowerPC processor, we recommend you choose the 320 x 200 mode. If you do this, the game will then be played in a smaller screen, but will run much more smoothly. If you play in the 640 x 400 resolution or "interlaced" modes, the game will run full screen, while remaining smooth. High Res mode is more detailed, but slower. The "Game" pop-up alters the display settings for the game, whereas the "Sequences" pop-up changes the settings for the non-interactive animations. Direct Display/QuickDraw Display - Direct Display is a technique which helps speed up display on most computers. It can be used to make the game run smoother, but it is incompatible with some Macintosh models and certain graphics cards. If this is the case and an error occurs, Knight's Chase will automatically reconfigure to QuickDraw mode. Thereafter, you will be able to change these options by selecting the "Preferences" option from the "Edit" menu. MIDI Music - If this option is grayed out, it means that you must install QuickTime and its corresponding files (QuickTime PowerPlug and QuickTime Instruments) if you wish to enjoy the KnightÕs Chase Demo music. You can then activate or deactivate the music as you please, and adjust the sound volume. Sound Effects - Here, you can activate or deactivate the Sound Effects and adjust the volume. Control Keys - To alter the keys you use to control the character, click on the zone which corresponds to the direction you require and press the key of your choice. When you move the character using your chosen keys, you can make him run by holding down the "Shift" key. To stop running, just release the direction key. You can also run by pressing the forward key twice in quick succession. Difficulty Level - You can choose to increase or lower the difficulty level of the game. The enemies will then be either harder or easier to kill. Options To Make Knights Chase Demo Run Faster: Deactivating the music - On bottom-of-the-range machines, we recommend you switch off the MIDI music - something which greatly slows down the game. Playing in 320 x 200 mode - By decreasing the screen size via the "Preferences" option in the "Edit" menu, you will make the game run much smoother. Switching to Direct Display mode - If your computer allows, switch to Direct Display mode via the "Preferences" option in the "Edit" menu. Disable virtual memory - For the game to work correctly, we recommend that you disable your Virtual Memory, if you are using it. Open the "Memory" Control Panel in your System Folder, disable the "Virtual Memory" option and reboot your computer. Caution: some packages are also virtual memory managers and may slow down the game considerably. This is especially the case with RAM DOUBLERª and with the "Speed Access" extension of SPEED DOUBLERª, published by Connectix. We strongly advise that you disable these programs to avoid sound or graphics glitches. You may, however, need to enable virtual memory if you Macintosh does not have enough memory for KnightÕs Chase Demo to work. Quitting all other applications - We strongly recommend that you quit all applications which you may have run prior to playing Knight's Chase Demo. The game will run much more smoothly. Disabling Control Panels and Extensions - Numerous packages, when installed in the system, these may interrupt or slow down your Macintosh whilst you are playing KnightÕs Chase Demo. If you experience intermittent pauses when playing the game, this may be what is happening. In your System Folder, there are two folders called "Control Panels" and "Extensions" which contain a number of small applications using up a large amount of memory. These applications may also conflict with the game. If you are using System 7.5 or above, you can temporarily disable the elements which are not being used, with the "Extensions Manager" Control Panel. If you do not have this manager, do as follows: Create a new folder and call it "Inactive". Put all non-essential Extensions or Control Panels (for example: Modem, Printer, File Sharing, etc.) into it and then reboot your computer. DO NOT MOVE ANY OF THE FILES REQUIRED TO WORK YOUR CD-ROM DRIVE. Refer to your computer documentation for more details. CAUTION! You must keep the "QuickTimeª" and "QuickTimeª Musical Instruments" as well as the "Sound Manager" (if you wish to play the KnightÕs Chase Demo music). When you have finished playing KnightÕs Chase Demo, move the inactive files back into the System Folder and reboot your computer. Trouble Shooting Locks up when opening Knight's Chase Demo - If you are running system 7.5.2 or earlier and Knight's Chase Demo crashes or locks-up just after launching, you will need to install Display Enabler 2.2.1 which is included in the System Software Installer on the Knight's Chase Demo CD ROM. Insufficient Memory - On some Macintosh systems, we have seen "Out of Memory" error messages appear if you access the game's "main menu" screen repeatedly. If this happens to you, turn off MIDI music to solve the problem. Before you start the game, Knight's Chase Demo requires a minimum of 8900K of free memory to run in 320 x 200 mode and 9900K of free memory to run in 640 x 400 mode. However, if you do not have enough memory, you should try disabling certain Extensions by following the instructions set out in the paragraph above. ("Disabling Control Panels and Extensions ") Modular Keyboards - If you have a modular keyboard (in two bits with a separate numeric keypad) we recommend that you assign all the movement controls to one section of the keyboard and not to both parts. Easy Access Control Panel - The "Easy Access" Control Panel may make an untimely appearance during a game, hindering game play. If you donÕt need to use it, just disable it. Video Mirroring - I f you have dual monitors, Knight's Chase Demo will not run properly with this feature enabled. Make sure you have this feature disabled before running the game Speed of the CD-ROM Drive - If your CD-ROM drive is too slow, the game may slow down momentarily or become jerky. Unfortunately, this is a hardware problem. KnightÕs Chase Demo will run more smoothly if you choose the "large" installation when installing the game. Two Monitors - If you choose to play the game off a secondary monitor, please make sure that the primary monitor is set to 256 colors or else the game will experience various palette problems. Problems With Certain Performaª computers - Some of the software packages installed on your Performa may interrupt your computer while you are playing KnightÕs Chase Demo. If you notice periodic pauses in the game, this may be what is happening. If your Performa has been delivered with a pre-installed modem, temporarily deactivate its Control Panel. For more details on this matter, please refer to the paragraph on ÒDeactivating Control Panels and ExtensionsÓ above. Joysticks MouseStick II - Copy the MouseStick settings for KnightÕs Chase Demo, which are located in the ÒJoysticksÓ folder of the "KnightÕs Chase Demo" CD-ROM, into the ÒMouseStick SetsÓ folder in your System Folder. Open the MouseStick II Control Panel, select "KnightÕs Chase Demo" and move your selection onto the picture of the joystick you are to use. Mac GamePad - Copy the GamePad settings for Knight's Chase, which are located in the ÒJoysticksÓ folder of the "KnightÕs Chase Demo" CD-ROM, into the ÒGamePad SetsÓ folder which is located in your System Folder. Open the Mac GamePad Control Panel, select "KnightÕs Chase Demo" and move your selection onto the picture of the joystick you are to use. When the keyboard has been chosen to move a player in KnightÕs Chase Demo, the GamePad will also work. For any joystick not dealt with above, read the instructions which come with it. If the joystick can move the cursor, you should be able to use it with KnightÕs Chase Demo.
